Product Description

Mullan Road Cellars was founded in 2012 by Dennis Cakebread of the renowned Cakebread Cellars winery in Napa Valley. A 40-year veteran of the wine trade, Dennis embarked on a mission to make a world-class Washington State wine embodying the rich history and terroir of the Northwest. Mullan Road Cellars is named for Lieutenant John Mullan, a 19th-century pioneer who built the first wagon road into eastern Washington. Its winemaker is Aryn Morrell, a Washington native who spent years making wine in Napa Valley with prestigious wineries such as Silver Oak Cellars, Joseph Phelps, Quintessa and Chappellet before returning to Washington in 2007.

The 2016 Mullan Road Red Wine Blend is sourced from several outstanding vineyards in the Columbia Valley, including the famed Seven Hills Vineyard. Perfumed aromas of currants, plum skin, dried herbs and spice make way for more intense notes of smoked raspberry, dried strawberry and vanilla bean. The flavors are layered and concentrated, providing a seamless palate filled with deep cherry, black fruits, sage and baking spices. Delicious, sultry and complex, this wine’s wonderful texture and silky tannins carry through to a long and lifted finish fitting for an age-worthy release.

Varietal Composition: 51 Cabernet Sauvignon, 29 Merlot, 20 Cabernet Franc
Appellation: Columbia Valley, Washington
Aging: 18 months in French and American oak barrels, 34 percent new

91 Points - Jeb Dunnuck
"Spicy oak, bouquet garni, and both red and black fruits emerge from the 2016 Red Wine Blend, which hits the palate with medium bodied richness, a seamless texture, and fine tannins. It's a balanced, elegant red that has fine tannins and loads to love." -JD, 4/11/19

90+ Points - Vinous
"Bright red-ruby. Currant, black cherry, tobacco leaf, mocha, licorice and menthol on the nose, all lifted by a floral topnote. Tightly wound today, with a streak of acidity currently keeping the wine's dark berry, plum, mint and wild herb flavors under wraps. In a distinctly cool style and presently quite backward but boasts terrific energy. Finishes with firm-edged, tooth-dusting tannins and some acidity to be absorbed. Intensely flavored but an awkward showing today, even if my sample showed a smoother texture with 24 hours in the recorked bottle." -ST, Nov/2018
