Product Description

Ciro Biondi is known as The Godfather of Etna wine for nurturing and championing this unique terroir and the varietals that are specific to the dangerous slopes of Mount Etna. The Biondi family have owned and cultivated their vineyards since at least 1600. Their three organically farmed vineyards are on the south-east slope of Mount Etna and are named "Chianta," "Cisterna Fuori," and "San Niccolo. "Cisterna Fuori" is an alberello-trained vineyard that is, as the name implies, planted on the steep slope of an extinct crater that was formed in 125 B.C. "San Nicolo" is also an alberello-trained vineyard on the slope of another crater that was formed about 12,000 years ago. Alberello translates to 'little tree' and indeed, each vine is staked and pruned to grow by itself, close to the ground, like a little tree. Total production for the winery is only around 1000 cases.

The 2015 Ciro Biondi "Outis" Etna Rosso is a blend of the Cisterna Fuori and San Nicolo vineyards. It is a light-medium red Pinot-like color with aromas of red and black fruits, leather, tobacco, spice, dried herbs, and volcanic hints. It's medium weight on the palate but very flavorful and long on the finish with excellent balance. This wine has far more weight and complexity than you'd expect from the relatively pale color (as is also true of Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo, of course).

Varietal Composition: 80 Nerello Mascalese, 20 Nerello Cappuccio
Appellation: Etna Rosso DOC
Aging: Fermented and aged entirely in stainless steel; no oak
