Product Description

This parcel takes its name from the word 'pierre' meaning 'stone'. La perrière was the old French term for a quarry. 'Les Preuses' are situated alongside an ancient Roman road. Over time 'la pierreuse' became 'la Preuse'.

Grand Cru Les Preuses covers 11.5 hectares sitting with an inclined south/southeast exposure bordering Vaudésir to the east and Bougros to the west. Soils here well drained and are made up primarily kimmeridgian (clay and limestone).

The 2014 Billaud Simon Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses is light yellow in color with golden reflections. The nose is rich yet delicate with mineral, creamy, floral and slightly iodized notes combined with a touch of honey and dried fruits. The palate reveals a direct attack and a powerful, well-honed and distinctive mid-palate. This wine offers a remarkable reflection of its clay terroir. Aromas of citrus blend harmoniously with mineral and iodized notes from its outstanding terroir.

Varietal Composition: 100 percent Chardonnay
Appellation: Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses AOC
Aging: 14 months, a portion of which is in used French oak barrels

93 Points - Wine Spectator
"A bracing sea breeze of a white, whose brine, green fruit and mineral flavors show a mouthpuckering intensity. Finishes tight and flinty, with a mouthwatering sensation. Think oysters or scallops. Best from 2018 through 2028."

(92-95) Points - Burghound
"A pungently complex nose is composed of petrol, citrus, white flower, pear and sea shore elements. The subtly mineral and highly complex flavors possess a highly beguiling texture before culminating in a strikingly long finish that is Zen-like in its harmony. This is a special effort that is worth the trouble to find."

92+ Points - Wine Advocate
"The 2014 Chablis Grand Cru les Preuses comes from 63-year-old vines and sees 16 months in 10% French oak, the remainder stainless steel. It has a lifted, oyster shell scented bouquet that is very well defined, even a touch of mint developing with continued aeration in the glass. The palate is fresh and vibrant with crisp acidity, quite saline towards the finish with a long, lightly spiced aftertaste. This has great aging potential and may merit a higher score down the line."

(90-92) Points - Vinous Media
"(from the oldest vineyard of the domain; aged 50% in stainless steel and 50% in old barrels): Bright, pale yellow. Peachy fruit salad on the nose. Plush and very ripe but quite closed today, showing a creaminess of texture and a faintly phenolic quality but only moderate detail and nuance. Comes across as almost exotic following the Monte de Tonnerre. "This wine needs some oxygenation from old barrels," noted Bernard Hervet.""
