Rivesaltes is an appelation for the historic vins doux naturels from a relatively large area of Roussillon in southern France, covering a total of 95 communes, and the majority of the Pyrenees-Orientales administrative departement. It is the largest single sweet wine appellation in France. These sweet wines, which have been revered since at least the fourteenth century, are made in three types: Ambre, Grenat, Tuile and Hors d'age. Rivesaltes Ambre wines are made predominantly from Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris, Maccabeu and Tourbat (Torbato), with a smaller amount (20%) of Muscat Blanc a Petit Grains or Muscat d'Alexandrie permitted. They are subjected to a minimum of two years' oxidative ageing, and they are deep golden yellow in their youth with aromas of sweet nuts and caramelized citrus fruits. |
